Online MBA: a checklist before you pay any fee

Entitlement for your exact programme and session, how classes and exams work, the full fee and the refund policy. What to check, and where.

Admission Mantra Editorial Team. Published . 6 min read.

An online MBA can be a sensible way to build management skills without leaving your job. Because admission is quick and payment is easy, it is also easy to enrol before checking the things that matter. This checklist covers what to verify, and where to verify it, before you pay.

1. Entitlement for your programme and session

Under the UGC's regulations for online programmes, a degree earned online is treated like the corresponding conventional degree only when the institution and the programme are entitled to offer it in online mode. Entitlement is listed for each academic session on the UGC-DEB website.

  • Find the university on deb.ugc.ac.in and check that it is entitled for the session you plan to join.
  • Check that the MBA itself, and any specialisation you choose, appears for online mode.
  • Compare the university's name and programme name exactly with what is printed on the admission page.

Our longer guide on checking UGC entitlement walks through the website step by step. If the session's list has not been published yet, ask the university in writing which list it is relying on.

2. The full fee, not just the first instalment

Ask for the total fee for the whole programme, including registration, examination, alumni and any other charges. If an EMI option is offered, ask who the finance provider is, what the interest or processing cost is, and what happens if you stop studying partway.

3. Refund and withdrawal policy

Read the refund policy before paying. It should say how much is refunded if you withdraw before classes start, after they start, or after a semester. The UGC has also issued guidance on fee refunds; compare the university's policy with it.

4. How classes and exams work

  • Are lectures live, recorded or both, and on which days and times?
  • How are exams conducted: online with remote proctoring, or at a centre?
  • What are the attendance or assignment requirements to sit the exams?
  • What happens if you miss an exam because of work or illness?

Warning signs

  • A counsellor or agent who will not share the university's official fee document.
  • Pressure to pay today to keep a 'special' discount.
  • Programme names that do not match the UGC-DEB listing.
  • Payments requested to a personal account rather than the university's official payment page.

5. What appears on your degree and transcript

Ask how the degree certificate and transcript will be worded, and whether they mention the mode of study. If you are considering further study or a government job, check what those organisations accept.

6. Career support, honestly described

Many universities advertise placement support for online learners. Ask what it actually includes, such as job portals, career sessions or company connections, and treat it as support rather than a promise of a job.

7. Your own plan

Finally, be clear about why you want the MBA. A specialisation that matches the work you want to do, and a schedule you can keep alongside your job, matter more than a long list of electives. The Mantra Degree Finder and our online-degree counsellors can help you compare universities side by side.
