About the university
RMIT began in 1887 as the Working Men's College of Melbourne, offering evening classes in art, science and technology to working people. It became a university in 1992 and today calls itself a global university of technology, design and enterprise. In 2027 it is ranked =119th in the world by QS and =239th by Times Higher Education.
RMIT is especially known for art and design (including fashion), architecture, engineering, computing and business. Many programmes are built around industry projects and work-integrated learning, so students work on real briefs from companies during their degree. Its Master of Data Science, Artificial Intelligence and Analytics are popular with Indian students who want a practical, applied course.
The main City campus is in Melbourne's central business district, spread across city blocks around Swanston Street, so lectures, libraries, cafés and trams are all within a few minutes' walk. Some design and engineering programmes use the Brunswick and Bundoora campuses in the northern suburbs. RMIT also has a large campus in Vietnam.
For Indian students, RMIT's 2027 master's fees are lower than the Group of Eight universities in Melbourne, at about A$47,000–52,000 a year, and RMIT offers a 20% tuition reduction to students from India and the subcontinent through its Future Leaders Scholarship.
