About the university

The Université de Sherbrooke (UdeS) was founded on 4 May 1954 and now has about 33,700 students on three campuses: two in Sherbrooke and one in Longueuil, across the river from Montreal. It has faculties of engineering, science, management, law, medicine and health sciences, education, humanities and physical activity sciences.

UdeS is known for its co-operative education. Its engineering bachelor's degrees are full-time co-op programmes; computer engineering, for example, includes five paid work terms of four months each, about 20 months of experience. Computer science can also be taken in a co-op format.

Teaching is in French, so this is a choice for Indian students who already speak French or are ready to learn it to a high level. Engineering programmes ask for C1 French in all four skills. In return, fees are moderate for Canada and the cost of living in Sherbrooke is lower than in Montreal or Toronto.

Sherbrooke is a mid-sized, French-speaking city in Quebec's Eastern Townships, east of Montreal, with long, snowy winters. Urban bus travel is included in tuition.

    Exemption from supplemental international tuition

Value: You pay a much lower rate; for example a full-time doctoral study term drops to $1,555 tuition plus fees

Eligibility: Some international students qualify because of their status or because Quebec has an agreement with their country (limited numbers). Research doctoral students can apply for an exemption for full-time study terms.

Admission requirements

Undergraduate

  • Applicants whose schooling was outside Quebec's CEGEP system, including Indian Class 12, are admitted to engineering on condition that they complete UdeS's preparatory certificate for undergraduate programmes (or an equivalent).
  • UdeS publishes minimum grades for international bachelor's applicants on its 'cotes minimales exigées' page.
  • All admitted engineering students must have very good French: C1 (500/699 or more) in all four skills unless exempt.
  • Pay the confirmation deposit before 1 May for autumn entry or before 15 December for winter entry.

Postgraduate

  • Master's in Electrical Engineering: a bachelor's in engineering with a cumulative average of at least 2.7 out of 4.3 or equivalent.
  • The same page says applicants from outside Canada should be in the final year of an engineering programme of at least five years, so check with the faculty how a four-year B.Tech is assessed.
  • Research streams need a professor who agrees to supervise you before admission.
  • French at C1 level is expected for engineering master's programmes; good English is needed to read research.

Documents

  • Valid passport
  • Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets (bachelor's applicants)
  • Degree transcripts and certificate (master's applicants)
  • French test result (C1 for engineering) unless exempt
  • Application fee of $106
  • Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ, about $135) and study permit (about $150) after admission

UdeS has a main campus and a Health Campus in Sherbrooke, and a campus in Longueuil on Montreal's South Shore. Some master's programmes, such as computer science, are also offered in Longueuil.

  • Faculties of engineering, science, management (École de gestion), law, medicine and health sciences, education, humanities and physical activity sciences.
  • Engineering degrees are full-time co-op programmes that alternate study terms and paid four-month work terms.
  • Urban transport in Sherbrooke is included in tuition.
  • The Longueuil Campus is on Montreal's South Shore, so some graduate students can study close to Montreal.
