About the university
The University of Windsor grew out of Assumption College, which opened in 1857 in what is now Windsor, Ontario. It became an independent, non-denominational public university in 1963. Today it is a mid-sized comprehensive university with faculties of engineering, science, business (the Odette School of Business), nursing, law, education and arts.
Windsor is Canada's southernmost city, right across the river from Detroit, and has long been tied to the North American car industry. The university's engineering faculty works closely with automotive and advanced-manufacturing companies, and its course-based master's programmes in engineering, applied computing and management are among the most popular in Canada with Indian graduates.
For Indian students the attractions are lower tuition and living costs than Toronto or Vancouver, course-based master's degrees that last about 12 to 16 months, and January and May intakes for several graduate programmes. Large numbers of Indian students mean an established community, but also strong competition for part-time jobs in a mid-sized city.
UWindsor locks base tuition for the normal length of your programme, which helps with planning. Exact fees appear only in its online fee estimator, so ask your counsellor for a written fee breakdown for your programme and intake before you pay a deposit.

Campus and location
The main campus sits beside the Detroit River and the Ambassador Bridge, with views of the Detroit skyline. Windsor is a mid-sized city with lower rents than Toronto, a mild climate for Canada and a large immigrant population.
- The Ed Lumley Centre for Engineering Innovation houses engineering teaching and labs.
- The School of Creative Arts and School of Social Work are in restored heritage buildings downtown.
- Windsor's automotive and manufacturing sector offers co-op and internship links for engineering students.
- Detroit is across the border; you need the right US visa to cross.
- Toronto is about 4 hours by road or train; Windsor has its own airport with flights to Toronto.
Careers and graduate outcomes
UWindsor's degree programmes lead to a Post-Graduation Work Permit when you meet IRCC's rules. University degrees are exempt from the field-of-study list that applies to college programmes, but the language test rule applies. Job markets in Windsor are smaller than in Toronto, so many graduates move to the Greater Toronto Area.
