About the university

Heidelberg University, founded in 1386, is the oldest university in present-day Germany. Its long history includes philosophers, scientists and dozens of Nobel laureates associated with the university, and it has been part of Germany's Excellence Initiative and Excellence Strategy since they began.

Heidelberg is a comprehensive research university with particular strength in medicine, the life sciences, physics, chemistry, mathematics and scientific computing. It sits within a dense cluster of research institutes, including the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and several Max Planck institutes, which gives students unusual access to research projects.

The town of Heidelberg lies on the Neckar river in Baden-Württemberg, famous for its castle ruins and old town. Teaching is split between the historic old town, where humanities and social sciences are based, and the Neuenheimer Feld campus across the river, where the sciences and medicine are concentrated. Frankfurt airport is about an hour away.

Heidelberg has a long link with India through its South Asia Institute, one of the oldest centres for South Asian studies in Europe. For Indian students, its English-taught master's in scientific computing, data science, physics and the molecular biosciences are the main draw. Non-EU students pay €1,500 per semester under state law.

Admission requirements

Undergraduate

  • Almost all Heidelberg bachelor's programmes are taught in German (C1 level needed).
  • An Indian Class 12 certificate on its own does not usually give direct entry; you typically need one or two years of a related bachelor's in India or a Studienkolleg year.
  • Indian applicants need an APS certificate.

Postgraduate

  • A bachelor's degree in a related subject with the grades and credits set in the programme's admission rules.
  • Apply online through Heidelberg's application portal; some programmes ask for documents through uni-assist.
  • Deadlines differ by programme; for October entry many close in spring or by 15 July.
  • Indian applicants need an APS certificate.

Documents

  • Valid passport
  • APS certificate (required for Indian applicants with an Indian degree)
  • Bachelor's degree certificate and transcripts (or an interim transcript with your current average if you are in your final year)
  • Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets
  • English test score (IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT), or a medium-of-instruction certificate where the programme accepts one
  • CV in tabular format
  • Statement of purpose or letter of motivation
  • Letters of recommendation, where the programme asks for them
  • GRE or GATE score, only for programmes that ask for it
  • Course module descriptions, for programmes that check your subject credits

Accommodation and living costs

Heidelberg is a small, popular city where rooms are scarce at the start of each winter semester. The Studierendenwerk Heidelberg runs student halls with waiting lists; many students also look in nearby Mannheim, which is cheaper and well connected by train.
