About the university

The Technische Universität Darmstadt was founded in 1877 and is one of Germany's leading universities of technology and a member of TU9. It has 13 departments and about 120 degree programmes in engineering, the natural sciences and the humanities.

TU Darmstadt is best known for computer science, IT security, electrical and mechanical engineering, and business and engineering. It works closely with industry in the Rhine-Main region.

For Indian students, the appeal is a long list of English-taught master's, including Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, IT Security and Aerospace Engineering, with no tuition fees. Admission checks your bachelor's against TU Darmstadt's own reference degree, and you may have to pass an entrance check or exam.

Darmstadt is a city of around 160,000 people with well over 40,000 students, south of Frankfurt in the Rhine-Main region, and the semester ticket covers local and regional trains across Germany.

Admission requirements

Undergraduate

  • Most TU Darmstadt bachelor's programmes are taught in German, so most Indian students apply for master's.
  • Applicants with an Indian school or university certificate need an APS certificate for bachelor's and master's (unless they passed a Studienkolleg exam in Germany).

Postgraduate

  • Your bachelor's is compared with TU Darmstadt's own reference degree. Computer Science, AI and Machine Learning and IT Security need at least 60 ECTS that match the core of TU Darmstadt's B.Sc. Informatik.
  • Most master's also need you to pass an entrance requirements check; if your documents do not show the required skills, you may have to sit a written entrance exam on campus. For AI and Machine Learning, a valid GRE or GATE score can exempt you.
  • Winter 2026/27 applications ran from 1 June to 15 July 2026 for most English-taught master's. Summer-semester applications usually open on 1 December; some programmes have earlier deadlines for international applicants.
  • You can apply before you have your bachelor's certificate and submit it later.
  • APS certificate required for Indian degrees.
