About the university

The Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU) was created in 2010 when the Kaunas University of Medicine and the Lithuanian Veterinary Academy merged. Both trace their history to the medical faculty of the University of Lithuania, which opened in Kaunas in 1922. Today LSMU is Lithuania's largest institution for biomedical education and research, with a Medical Academy and a Veterinary Academy and seven faculties.

Its main teaching hospital, the Hospital of LSMU Kaunas Clinics, is the largest clinical practice base in the country, and students also train at LSMU Kaunas Hospital and veterinary clinics. The Faculty of Nursing is one of five WHO collaborating centres in Europe, and the Institute of Health Research is a WHO collaborating centre for chronic disease prevention. LSMU says its medical graduates can sit the USMLE and the UK's PLAB.

LSMU is very international: around a fifth to a quarter of students come from abroad, mainly from Israel, Sweden and Germany, and about 20 programmes are taught in English. Besides medicine and dentistry it offers pharmacy, veterinary medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, health psychology, public health, food science and laboratory medicine.

For Indian students LSMU is mainly a medicine, dentistry and pharmacy option. Medicine costs €12,800 a year for the first three years and €13,300 for the last three; dentistry €13,600 then €14,100; pharmacy €5,600 then €5,700. A NEET score of 650, with the required biology and chemistry marks, can exempt you from LSMU's entrance test. If you plan to practise in India, check the National Medical Commission's current rules for foreign medical graduates (course length, internship and licensing) before you apply; this page does not confirm NMC eligibility.

Campus and location

LSMU is in Kaunas, Lithuania's second city, about 100 km from Vilnius. Kaunas is a student city with lower living costs than the capital. The main administration is at A. Mickevičiaus Street 9 in the centre, and clinical teaching happens at Kaunas Clinics in the Eiveniai area.

  • Hospital of LSMU Kaunas Clinics: the country's largest clinical practice base, used from the early clinical years.
  • LSMU Kaunas Hospital and veterinary clinics are additional training sites.
  • Library and Information Centre listed among modern European libraries (LIBER).
  • More than 140 partner universities in Europe, America and Asia for exchanges.
  • Student Registration Week is held a week before classes start on 1 September.
  • Non-EU students apply for a temporary residence permit through MIGRIS and VFS Global; permits are usually issued for 2 years.

Careers and graduate outcomes

Most LSMU international graduates go on to residency or licensing exams in their home country or elsewhere in Europe. LSMU says its medical graduates can take the USMLE and PLAB. Indian graduates who want to practise in India must meet the National Medical Commission's rules and pass the licensing exam that applies at the time; check these before you enrol. The figures below are general facts rather than graduate outcomes, which LSMU does not publish for international students.

FAQs

Can I get into LSMU medicine with my NEET score?

A NEET score of 650, with LSMU's minimum biology and chemistry scores, can exempt you from the entrance test. Without it you take LSMU's online interview and biology–chemistry exam.

How much does MBBS (Medicine) at LSMU cost?

€12,800 a year for years 1–3 and €13,300 a year for years 4–6 (2027 admission), plus a €150 application fee and €250 registration fee. Non-EU medicine students pay half a year's tuition as a deposit to confirm their place.

Is LSMU's medicine degree valid in India?

LSMU's MD is a 6-year English-taught degree. Whether it meets the National Medical Commission's rules depends on the NMC regulations in force when you enrol, including internship and licensing conditions. Check the NMC website and ask LSMU in writing before you apply.

What is the application deadline?

Applications for September 2027 open on 1 November 2026 and close on 6 July 2027. Entrance tests run from 12 January to 15 July 2027, so apply early to get a test date.

Do I need to learn Lithuanian?

Teaching is in English, but clinical work involves Lithuanian patients, so learning the language helps a great deal during the clinical years.

Is a hostel available?

Yes, three dormitories in Kaunas, with places from about €80 to €250 a month, but places are limited. You can apply after your status changes to 'Enrolled'.
