About the university
The University of the Basque Country (EHU) is the public university of the Basque Country in northern Spain. It was founded in 1980 and has about 40,000 students in 20 faculties and schools on three campuses: Araba, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa.
EHU teaches in Basque and Spanish, but it also runs a group of master's fully taught in English. These include quantum science and technology, smart grids, language analysis and processing, economics, environmental toxicology and several Erasmus Mundus programmes.
For Indian students the attraction is low public tuition. EHU's price chart lists €25–€62 per credit for most master's, so a one-year master's usually costs about €1,800–€3,300. Students with degrees from outside Europe first apply to EHU for an access authorisation.
The Bizkaia campus is centred on Leioa, and some engineering teaching takes place at the Faculty of Engineering in Bilbao. Daily life in the region runs in Spanish and Basque.

EHU grants for attracting talent to master's courses

Eligibility: Apply online between 14 July and 30 September 2026, for one master's only, with documents on language skills, academic record and other merits. Check the call for eligibility.

Admission requirements
Undergraduate
- EHU bachelor's degrees are taught mainly in Basque and Spanish, so they suit students with strong Spanish.
- Check EHU's admissions pages for the access route for school qualifications from outside the EU.
Postgraduate
- Holders of degrees from outside the European Higher Education Area, such as Indian degrees, apply to EHU for an authorisation for access to master's study. The degree must allow postgraduate study in India.
- EHU's Postgraduate Commission reviews the request and issues a certificate for one or more fields of knowledge.
- You can be admitted conditionally while the authorisation is pending, but it must arrive before the enrolment deadline.
- Then pre-enrol for your chosen master's; each programme selects on its own criteria.

Campus and location
EHU has three campuses, one in each Basque province: Araba, Bizkaia (main campus in Leioa) and Gipuzkoa.
- Bizkaia hosts English-taught master's in quantum technology, economics and environmental toxicology.
- Gipuzkoa hosts the Faculty of Informatics, with master's in language processing, computational intelligence and embedded systems.
- Some master's teach with partners, such as ESTIA in France for smart grids, or research centres such as Plentzia Marine Station.
- About 6% of students are international (THE data).
