About the university

Sheffield Hallam University traces its roots to the Sheffield School of Design, founded in 1843. It became Sheffield City Polytechnic and, in 1992, Sheffield Hallam University. Today it is one of the UK's largest universities, with about 31,000 students.

Hallam describes itself as an applied university focused on real-world impact. It is known for computing, business, engineering, health and nursing, sport, and hospitality and tourism, and most master's offer a work experience route with a placement of up to 12 months.

For Indian students the main attractions are moderate fees (most one-year master's cost £19,530 for 2027/28), both September and January starts, and an automatic Vice-Chancellor's Award for students from South Asia. Hallam also says it may accept 70% in Standard XII English as equivalent to IELTS 6.0.

Sheffield is a large, student-friendly city in South Yorkshire. Hallam notes that living costs are lower than in Manchester, Leeds or London.
