What is Architecture?

Quick read

  • Architecture combines design studios with history, technology, structures and environmental design.
  • Becoming a registered architect follows a country-specific route (for example ARB in the UK), so check how your degree fits.
  • Indian BArch graduates usually choose a master's in architecture, urban design, landscape or sustainable design.
  • UK architectural assistants start around £24,500–£28,000 (Part 1); qualified architects earn about £36,000–£50,000 (Prospects, 2025).
  • A strong design portfolio is central to admission.

Architecture is the design of buildings and spaces. Most of your time is spent in design studio, developing projects through drawings, models and digital tools, supported by modules in construction, structures, sustainability and history.

Professional routes vary by country. In the UK, registration is with the Architects Registration Board (ARB); other countries have their own bodies. In India, practising as an architect requires registration with the Council of Architecture.

Study Architecture abroad: FAQs

Can I become a registered architect abroad with an Indian BArch?

Each country has its own process. Some require extra exams or study. In the UK, ARB has a route for overseas qualifications. Check before you apply.

Is a portfolio required for a master's in architecture?

Yes. The portfolio is usually the most important part of your application.

Will a foreign architecture degree let me practise in India?

Only after registration with the Council of Architecture, which assesses foreign qualifications. Check its rules before choosing a course.

MArch or MSc Urban Design?

A professional MArch is for registration routes abroad; an MSc or MA in urban or sustainable design builds a specialism.
