What is Biotechnology?
Quick read
- Biotechnology applies biology to make products and solve problems in medicine, agriculture, food and the environment.
- Master's specialisations include molecular biotechnology, bioinformatics, biopharmaceuticals and bioprocess engineering.
- Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany and the UK have strong pharma and biotech industries.
- UK biotechnologists start around £19,000–£24,000 and earn £25,000–£50,000 with experience (Prospects, 2025).
- Lab skills, research projects and, for many research careers, a PhD make a big difference.
Biotechnology combines molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry and engineering to develop medicines, vaccines, diagnostics, crops and industrial processes. Courses are lab-intensive and usually end with a research project.
Students with a BTech or BSc in biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry or pharmacy often take a specialist master's abroad, sometimes as a step towards a PhD.
