What is Marketing?

Quick read

  • Marketing degrees cover consumer behaviour, branding, digital marketing, market research and marketing analytics.
  • Digital and data skills now sit at the centre of most marketing courses.
  • Many universities include live client briefs or placements.
  • UK marketing assistants start around £25,000–£27,000 (Prospects, 2025).
  • A portfolio of campaigns and projects helps as much as grades when applying for jobs.

Marketing is about understanding customers and getting the right product to them in the right way. Courses cover research, segmentation, branding, pricing, advertising, social and search marketing, and measuring results.

You can study marketing as a bachelor's, as a specialist master's (MSc Marketing, Digital Marketing, Marketing Analytics) or as a specialisation within a business degree or MBA.
