What is Psychology?
Quick read
- Psychology covers cognitive, developmental, social and biological psychology, research methods and statistics.
- Becoming a practising psychologist takes several stages of study and supervised training in most countries.
- In the UK, a BPS-accredited degree or conversion master's gives the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership.
- UK trainee clinical psychologists are paid on NHS Band 6; qualified clinical psychologists start on Band 7 (Prospects, 2025).
- To practise as a clinical psychologist in India, check Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) rules before choosing a course abroad.
Psychology is the scientific study of how people think, feel and behave. Degrees mix theory with experiments, statistics and research projects, and introduce applied fields such as clinical, health, educational and organisational psychology.
A first degree or master's is usually the start, not the end, of training to practise. Clinical and counselling psychologists need further professional training, so plan the full route for the country where you want to work.
