What is MBA?
Quick read
- An MBA is a postgraduate management degree for people who already have work experience, usually at least 2–3 years.
- Full-time MBAs abroad take 1 year in much of Europe and 1–2 years elsewhere.
- Most good MBAs ask for GMAT or GRE scores, an interview and essays.
- MBA fees are usually higher than the master's ranges in the table below; check each school's current fee.
- Look for accreditation by AACSB, AMBA or EQUIS when comparing schools.
The Master of Business Administration (MBA) prepares experienced professionals for senior management. The core covers strategy, finance, marketing, operations, leadership and economics, followed by electives and often a consulting project.
Unlike pre-experience master's, an MBA relies on what classmates bring from their jobs. That is why admissions look closely at your career so far, your goals and how you will contribute.

Study MBA abroad: FAQs
Can I do an MBA abroad without work experience?
Most reputable full-time MBAs expect work experience. Without it, a master's in management or a specialist MSc is usually the better choice.
Is GMAT compulsory?
Not everywhere. Many schools ask for GMAT or GRE; some waive it for strong academic or professional profiles. Check each school.
One-year or two-year MBA?
A one-year MBA costs less time and living expenses. A two-year MBA gives a summer internship, which helps career switchers.
How much does an MBA abroad cost?
MBA tuition varies widely by school and country and is usually higher than other master's. Living costs are extra. We can give you current figures for the schools on your list.
What is the difference between an MBA and an Executive MBA?
An Executive MBA is part-time or modular for senior professionals who keep working, so student visas usually don't apply.
