What is Cyber Security?
Quick read
- Cyber security courses cover network security, cryptography, secure software, ethical hacking, digital forensics and security management.
- Most master's expect a computing or engineering degree; some management-focused courses accept other graduates.
- Professional certifications (such as those from ISC2, CompTIA or OffSec) are valued alongside a degree.
- UK cyber security analysts with 1–3 years' experience earn around £35,000–£49,000 (Prospects, 2025).
- Some security jobs, especially in government and defence, need security clearance that can be hard to get as a new arrival.
Cyber security is the practice of protecting computer systems and data from attack. Courses combine technical modules, such as network defence and penetration testing, with risk management, law and incident response.
In the UK, the National Cyber Security Centre certifies some degrees, which is a useful quality signal. Many programmes run hands-on labs where you attack and defend systems safely.
Why study Cyber Security abroad

Study Cyber Security abroad: FAQs
Is cyber security a good course after BTech CS?
Yes. A specialist master's builds directly on computing and networking knowledge from your degree.
Do I need certifications as well as a degree?
They help. Employers often look for certifications alongside a degree, and some courses prepare you for them.
Can I join government cyber jobs abroad?
Many government and defence roles need security clearance and may require citizenship or years of residence. Private sector roles are the usual route for international graduates.
Is a management-focused cyber course easier to get into?
Some accept graduates from any subject, but they lead to governance and risk roles rather than technical ones.
What is an NCSC-certified degree?
A UK degree the National Cyber Security Centre has assessed against its standards. It is a quality signal, not a requirement.
